Improving Aeroengine Cycle Simulations through Early-Stage Component Design with AxSTREAM and NPSS

The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS®) environment is a powerful tool used in the aerospace industry to model turbomachinery, propulsion systems and various other thermodynamic cycles. Traditionally, certain assumptions need to be made for the component characteristics, e.g. turbine efficiency or compressor pressure ratio, during this modelling process. Because of this, the results of the cycle performance will only be as good and as accurate as the provided assumptions. The NPSS tool offers flexibility due to its object-orientated structure and therefore allows the user to create their own components. Hence, what if you could use more precise values to describe the performance of the single components and obtain an initial geometry suited for the calculated cycle? That is where the integration of the AxSTREAM® platform within NPSS comes into play.
In this webinar, a collaboration between the Southwest Research Institute and SoftInWay Inc., attendees will learn how AxSTREAM’s generative design capabilities can be beneficial for NPSS cycle model calculations by utilizing preliminary 1D compressor results. A quick introduction to NPSS and the AxSTREAM platform including the steps needed to change input parameters to accommodate for different geometries, will be shown. We’ll then focus on the integration of AxSTREAM and setup of the compressor component within NPSS. We’ll conclude with example workflows of a turbofan cycle including the newly created compressor component. By the end of this webinar, attendees will have a good understanding of how AxSTREAM and NPSS can be used together to improve cycle accuracy and performance of turbofan engines.
