Supersonic turbines are known for their high specific power, compactness, low weight, and reduced manufacturing and operational costs, making them ideal for applications where these factors are critical. Among the many applications where supersonic turbines excel, one of the most notable is their use in liquid rocket engines. Despite these advantages, engineers have traditionally preferred multistage axial subsonic turbines in applications where efficiency is prioritized, assuming that supersonic turbines were less efficient.

However, recent advancements in the AxSTREAM platform’s holistic design capabilities are challenging this view. By leveraging AxSTREAM’s powerful design and optimization tools, supersonic turbines can now replace 2-5 stage subsonic turbines in applications like chemical processing, metallurgy, carbon capture, geothermal power plants, and more. These supersonic turbines, designed through AxSTREAM®, offer comparable performance while significantly reducing size, costs, and maintenance complexity.

AxSTREAM enhances the design of supersonic turbines through its advanced optimization capabilities, particularly for convergent-divergent nozzles. This innovative approach ensures not only efficiency but also cost-effectiveness, enabling the creation of single-stage supersonic turbines that exceed the performance of previous-generation supersonic turbines and challenge the performance of traditional multistage axial turbines. By utilizing AxSTREAM’s fast, generative design process, engineers can simplify maintenance and lower overall costs, making supersonic turbines an attractive alternative for various applications.

In this webinar, we will showcase real-world examples where advanced supersonic turbines, equipped with convergent-divergent nozzles, can be leveraged as an alternative to multistage axial turbines in various industries. Attendees will gain insights into the potential benefits and performance enhancements these innovative technologies can offer, alongside the specific applications where supersonic turbines could be a compelling option for future use.
