Description:

This training course provides participants with a practical understanding of the design/redesign and analysis of axial turbine flow paths for applications such as steam turbines and gas turbines in power generation, mechanical drive, aeronautics and astronautics. The course is highlighted with reverse engineering and optimization of available turbine designs. Design and analysis exercises will be performed using SoftInWay’s AxSTREAM® suite and covers the reverse engineering as well as new design/redesign process of axial steam and gas turbines. The course will end with an optional one-day workshop on Steam turbine sealing and gas turbine cooling scheme simulation with AxSTREAM NET™ and Q&A session on your own projects.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to reverse engineering and design process to analyze, retrofit and redesign gas and steam turbines;
  • How to import 3D models or cloud of points of current design for analysis;
  • Determine missing initial geometrical data during reverse engineering using preliminary design tool if necessary for flow path design;
  • Meanline and streamline calculations using direct solvers for 1D/2D analysis;
  • Evaluation of losses;
  • Off-design performance prediction (maps) for a given design;
  • Geometry optimization using different techniques;
  • Blade profiling and 3D blade design including airfoils stacking and export of results to 3D CAD programs;
  • Cooling in gas turbines;
  • 3D FEA for structural analysis and 3D CFD for computation of flow in blade channels;
  • Creation of custom fluids including mixtures and combustion products;
  • Introduction of Thermal-Fluid Network for Steam and Gas Turbine Systems;
  • Secondary flows and seals simulation;
  • Gas turbine rotor cooling including rotor-rotor and rotor-stator cavities;
  • Q&A Session on your own projects

This hands-on course lasts 4 days (8 hours per day, with the 4th day being optional) and is targeted toward individuals such as:

  • Engineers involved in the turbomachinery design and optimization process who are looking for ways to improve the steam and gas turbine design process and significantly reduce production time
  • Engineers who are interested in learning how to do reverse engineering and new design of rotating machinery with an integrated platform
  • Engineering professionals interested in learning more about the capabilities of the AxSTREAM® platform for axial turbine design, including for evaluation purpose
  • Engineering and turbomachinery scholars interested in learning about the new AxSTREAM® platform features and their impact on the field of turbomachinery
  • Turbomachinery Engineering students who interested in early adaption in cutting-edge turbine design technologies

Engineers who work on sCO2 or ORC turbine design are also strongly encouraged to attend this training because the same philosophy applies. Upon completion, participants will be able to re-design complete 3D axial turbine flow paths based on available design or create new design from basic boundary conditions data and will receive a free 30-day trial license of AxSTREAM® under SoftInWay Core Team Tech Support for the modules explored to continue their progress toward building more efficient turbomachinery.
