Understanding and Applying API Standards to Rotor Dynamics in Turbomachinery
In this online seminar, we will teach external vendors, consultants, OEM’s, and maintenance personnel how to interpret reports and charts as it pertains to vibrations and reliability of the rotor-bearing system as well as how to perform rotor dynamics analyses and understand the results
Date: Wednesday, January 18th
Time: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST
Cost: $100 USD
Rotordynamics analysis is a necessary part of any rotating machinery design process; with each machine having specific as well as common analysis approaches. For example, equivalent rotordynamics models for the steam turbines and pumps are quite similar, but the analysis is based on damping ratios for pumps while vibration levels and amplification factors are analyzed for turbines. From the analysis results, different techniques must be applied to overcome potential problems with rotordynamics for different machines. Standards of the American Petroleum Institute (API) cover special-purpose steam turbines, gas turbines, compressors, pumps, electrical machines and include sections related to machinery dynamics, vibration and balancing. API standards are widely used in various industries and serve as guidelines for rotordynamics analysis and machine reliability. Using such standards however requires experience in rotordynamics as well as knowledge of how to apply the rules, general approaches, and acceptance criteria. Additionally, understanding of the applicability of different API standards to a specific design is vital.
The main goal of this seminar is to provide consultants, equipment owners, operators, vibration analysts, condition monitoring and maintenance personnel with an understanding of API Standards, procedures, and acceptance criteria. It will also cover mandatory analysis types that should be performed, requirements for equivalent rotordynamics model development, machine design features and effects that should be accounted for in accordance with API. Additionally, the applicability and specifics of different API standards (API 611, 612, 617, 541, 546, 610, 613, 673, and 684) for different machine types will be explored.
The seminar will discuss how API paragraphs can be treated and why these rules should be satisfied. Attention will be paid to rotor dynamics analysis reports and understanding of what information must be presented, how to interpret that information and associated charts with results, and what conclusions can be drawn about reliability. Fundamentals including an overview and theoretical background of rotordynamics, as well as practical cases for different rotor-bearing systems, are also considered to give a clear understanding of the subject.
