AxSTREAM EDU – Software

AxSTREAM® EDU, the educational package of AxSTREAM®, comes in a variety of versions and provides students and faculty with a state-of-the-art turbomachinery design and multidisciplinary optimization software suite at minimal expense. The software can be used to enrich the overall student educational experience by giving them the opportunity to work with real-world design tools. AxSTREAM® EDU is also the program of choice for educational institutions that need to focus more time on teaching turbomachinery design and multidisciplinary optimization principles and less time worrying about how to construct a course using separate engineering systems and platforms.

AxSTREAM – Educational Version

 

These programs constitute a “learn-as-you-go” mentality that aids students in understanding the overall design and performance principles of turbomachinery through the same fully- integrated AxSTREAM® commercial program used by engineers that have graduated college and are working in a professional setting. The educational version is designed to be easily integrated into any turbomachinery engineering program’s core curriculum.

With the AxSTREAM® educational version, students will be able to:

  • Design a flow path based on given overall application requirements
  • Perform design optimization encompassing 1D and 2D direct problem computation
  • Generate cascade profiles that easily relate to aerodynamic theory
  • Search for the optimal twist law of classic and long blades
  • Perform full 3D blade design with a custom twist, lean and sweep
  • Perform calculations of 2D and 3D analysis in blade-to-blade channel as well as finite element analysis on blades and attachments
  • Perform rotordynamics analysis and calculate mechanical and hydrodynamic characteristics of various bearing types.
  • Engage in secondary flows and cooling system simulation for a wide range of applications

This powerful software permits the students to both validate course theory and gain practical skills. It also exposes students to the steps of the real flow path design process and experience. The convenient and intelligent interface allows the students to test all the “what if” variants and provides them with the ability to check thousands of cases in minutes to identify suitable sets of design parameters for each stage of the design process.

AxSTREAM Education Version (Flow Path) Limitations

  • Limited number of spanwise stations for 2D-calculations and blade design (up to 5 for axial machines and up to 3 for radial machines)
  • Limited number of profile points (up to 120)
  • 1 project per session
  • Limited number of stages in machine (up to 5 for both axial and radial machines) for design and analysis
  • Ideal gas with fixed R and k (air) usage only
  • Features such as ATLAS, blade geometry export, and profile optimization by minimal loss are inaccessible.
AxSTREAM Education Version (Rotor Dynamics) Limitations
  • Limited lateral RotorDynamics analysis (up to axial 8 sections)
  • Limited torsional RotorDynamics analysis (up to 1 rotor)
  • Limited journal plain cylindrical bearing calculations (up to 2 pockets)
  • Limited tilting pad bearing calculations (up to 3 lobes with no pockets)
  • Limited thrust tilting pad bearing calculations (up to 5 lobes with no pockets)
  • Limited aerodynamic cross-coupling calculations (up to 2 stages)
  • Calculations on fixed pad bearings, thrust fixed pad bearings, rolling element bearings, squeeze film dampers, and liquid annular seals are inaccessible.
AxSTREAM Education Version (AxSTREAM NET) Limitations
  • Limited components for modeling of thermal-fluid systems (up to 20 components)
  • Use of working fluids in AxSTREAM® NET are limited to ideal gas with non-customizable properties (air).
