SoftInWay Announces “No Turbomachinery Engineer Left Behind!”

Engineering R&D Company enters its finest hour, offering free educational software and courses to engineers affected by the Covid-19 outbreak

Burlington, MA, March 31, 2020 – What began as a short campaign to give engineers an opportunity to learn while working remotely has reached hundreds of engineers all over the world. As a result, SoftInWay is announcing a new campaign to help engineers who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic which has left untold numbers of individuals jobless and many more on unpaid leave.

The campaign, called “No Turbomachinery Engineer Left Behind”, started as a promotion by SoftInWay to give engineers who were working remotely something to do with the extra time they now had, with many being ordered to stay home in order to help “flatten the curve”. Anyone who shared SoftInWay’s newsletter with information on staying safe during the pandemic, or the accompanying post on LinkedIn, was eligible to receive free access to a self-paced course of their choosing on SoftInWay’s Turbomachinery University. The promotion was met with overwhelming success and popularity and has been extended for an extra week to allow more engineers to take advantage of this offering as more stay-at-home orders are taking affect and social distancing becomes more important.

The campaign will now take on a more expanded meaning, as SoftInWay will be offering its proprietary AxSTREAM® educational software platform to engineers who have either lost their job or been indefinitely laid off as a result of the covid-19 outbreak and its affect on the economy. AxSTREAM EDU is currently utilized by hundreds of universities worldwide to foster learning the ins and outs of turbomachinery design in a non-commercial application in the same interface; this makes it a great tool for engineers and students to brush up on their design skills as well as get them familiar with the widely used AxSTREAM® platform.

Upon successful completion of any SoftInWay Turbomachinery Course, engineers will be given a certificate. Additionally, SoftInWay will help engineers find new careers via customer referral, allowing those who have become familiarized with AxSTREAM through “No Turbomachinery Engineer Left Behind” the opportunity to put their turbomachinery education to work for a company as soon as possible.

Turbomachinery Mainstay Donates Commercial Software to AIAA Competition for 9th year in a row.

Burlington, MA, March 2, 2020 – For the 9th year in a row, SoftInWay is sponsoring the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Undergraduate Engine Design Competition to design a gas turbine engine for a supersonic business jet. Engineering students from around the world come together for this competition and apply their talents and skills in a scenario very similar to what they will encounter in their professional careers.

Competitors will be challenged with designing a gas turbine engine to replace the current propulsion system on a supersonic business jet. The new engines should enable the plane to travel past the speed of sound and complete a transatlantic round trip in a day without generating sonic booms over land. Excess noise was part of the reason the famous Concorde supersonic airliner had to be retired, in addition to excessive fuel consumption and unaffordable airfare.

Using SoftInWay’s proprietary AxSTREAM® software platform, students will be able to design and analyze their supersonic engine concepts based on the required specifications while avoiding the pitfall of using multiple programs for different stages of the design process and needing to be proficient in multiple design programs.

SoftInWay Wins USAF Contract to Develop Multi-Use Hypersonic Engine

Major Turbomachinery Player Begins New Decade with Hypersonic Engine R&D Project

Burlington, MA, January 22, 2020 –  It was announced today that SoftInWay, Inc. is kicking off a new project to develop a multi-use hypersonic engine. SoftInWay was awarded a Phase 1 SBIR contract through the AFWERX program to use its internally developed AxSTREAM® platform to explore the different potential applications of a hypersonic engine for both military use and commercial aviation. Development of such an engine has the potential to create a revolutionary form of flight, as it would propel aircraft up to 6 times the speed of sound.

SoftInWay’s engineers will put their extensive knowledge of turbomachinery to use by designing an engine that can be a propulsion system for different kinds of aircraft and applications. Potential uses for the engine include use on fighter-bombers, business jets, and space exploration craft.  Having such a modular and adaptable engine design would make spare parts more common as well as reduce redesign and development manufacturing costs. Additionally, it would ensure standardization of equipment in aircraft fleets and scalability.

When asked about the project, Valentine Moroz, COO of SoftInWay, Inc. said, “This project marks a milestone for both military and commercial R&D. Once more SoftInWay’s engineers will lead the charge in the next evolution for air and space travel. In power generation and clean energy, we were early adopters for sCO² as a cleaner, more efficient working fluid. Now we’ll take that same commitment and drive to advance science into the stratosphere. I should add, however, the sky is not the limit with this technology.  We’re excited to explore just how feasible this technology is for everything from enabling the ‘transcontinental commute’ to improving response times for military aircraft deployment, to creating a new generation of rapid-response countermeasures. The Concorde will probably never make a return, but that drive and desire for high-speed travel will live on thanks to hypersonic technology, and projects like this.”

SoftInWay, Inc. Supports Future Engineers Competing in TEKNOFEST 2019

Major turbomachinery software provider donates CAE platform to TEKNOFEST competitors.

Burlington, MA, October 15th, 2019 – SoftInWay, Inc. is proud to announce its sponsorship of more than 130 undergraduates and graduates from universities including İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi and Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi who took part in the TEKNOFEST Turbofan Motor Design Competition; offering competitors access to the same software tools used by engineers at major companies such as Boeing, Safran, Orbex, Zunum, and Reaction Engines. These students competed in teams to design the best turbofan engine and win up to 50,000. Turkish lira: more than $8,500.00 USD.

Taking place in September 2019 at Istanbul New Airport, the 4-day festival was home to several competitions in addition to the first ever Turbofan Engine Design Competition, including the Mini Jet Radial Compressor Design Competition, Robotics Competitions, and UAV and Fighter-UAV Design Competitions.

Competitors in the Turbofan Engine Design Competition were required to prepare both a preliminary design and final design report. Finalists were then invited to present their results.

Using the AxSTREAM® Preliminary Design module, competitors entered the boundary conditions given and generated a range of dozens to thousands of designs which met the desired parameters. From there, the competitors designed their turbofan engine components in 1D, 2D, and 3D, performing design analysis and optimization along the way. First place went to ETU-Griffon of TOBB ETÜ, who created a 2-spool low-bypass turbofan engine design with an afterburner.

“This competition is and will continue to be a great opportunity for these young engineers in Turkey and around the world. They were able to compete for money, but they also received hands-on experience using a commercial software program implemented into numerous aerospace companies around the world for this exact application. By enabling engineering students to use commercial software for their original designs, the sky is the limit for what they can do. We created AxSTREAM® to foster healthy competition and drive innovation within the industry, giving companies the best tools possible to make revolutionary designs in addition to improving what already exists. These student competitors are getting a head-start on what they can expect in their aerospace engineering careers. SoftInWay and GTI Develop Design for Revolutionary New Engine

Burlington, MA, April 30th, 2019 – SoftInWay, Inc. and GTI announce the concept of a new kind of heat engine with the potential to achieve greater than 65% net electrical or mechanical power-conversion efficiency and provide ultra-low pollutant emissions at a competitive cost. In this DOE-funded project led by GTI, the partners are working together to further the sustainable use of fossil energy (FE) resources and reduce the risk and cost of advanced technologies.

SoftInWay, Inc. and GTI have collaborated to identify the best options for a sub-atmospheric modular hybrid heat engine (MHHE) for FE applications. SoftInWay’s engineers successfully performed thermodynamic cycle simulations, which helped determine the MHHE’s operating regimes. In addition, they designed the compressor and the turbine for low pressure and sub-atmospheric configurations and refined the integrated MHHE layout.

“At the end of the day, our overall goal is the advancement of science and technology. When SoftInWay was founded 20 years ago, our focus was turbomachinery component design. We have since expanded into system level design, creating and optimizing advanced thermodynamic cycles ranging from steam and gas to ORC and supercritical CO2 cycles in power plants. In this project with GTI, we are advancing power generation and improving upon the science and technology already in place. It is important to develop alternative energy options, but it is just as important to improve upon what already exists and continue to innovate, particularly when you are looking at a non-renewable resource like fossil energy. We have to make every bit of it count because so much of the world is depending on it,” said Dr. Leonid Moroz, SoftInWay’s CEO.

“State-of-the-art gas turbine power generators are less efficient relative to other generating technologies, so today’s energy market is looking for more efficient and cost-effective turbines or turbine-based modular hybrid solutions, and GTI’s research and engineering team is responding to market demand. The transformational MHHE concept we are developing represents a smart combination of a high-efficiency sub-atmospheric air turbine and multi-fuel reciprocating internal combustion engine with an advanced humidifying regenerator.

“This approach offers cleaner and more efficient capabilities than existing technologies. The modular heat engines provide flexibility in meeting power requirements because the small scale allows them to be combined to create larger sizes as needed,” said GTI’s project manager Dr. Yaroslav Chudnovsky.

Orbex and University of Alabama Leverage SoftInWay’s Newly Launched AxSTREAM Space™ Bundle

Burlington, MA, December 11, 2018 – SoftInWay is excited to announce that Orbex and the University of Alabama have become the latest commercial and educational organizations respectively, to leverage AxSTREAM Space™, SoftInWay’s software bundle package specifically developed for space application and design of turbopump components and systems in rocket engines.

The AxSTREAM Space™ bundle includes all steps from multivariate conceptual design to full multi-dimensional geometry of the turbomachinery components, allowing design of both pumps and turbine, investigation of secondary flows, and analysis of rotor-bearing systems; all automated and integrated throughout the platform.

Founded in 2015, Orbex is an emerging European leader in orbital microlaunch services, focused on supporting the needs of the rapidly growing small satellite industry. Orbex is developing an innovative, break-through orbital launch vehicle called Prime to deliver small satellites into Earth’s orbit. When completed, the launch vehicle aims to be 30% lighter and 20% more efficient than its industry counterparts and will be able to transport payloads ranging between 100kg-220kg to altitudes of up to 1250km. To complete this project, the Orbex team will be using AxSTREAM Space™ for the design of cryogenic turbomachinery components and systems.

In addition to Orbex, the University of Alabama has recently adopted AxSTREAM Space™ into their aerospace program.  The Alabama Rocket Engineering Systems team, or ARES, a group made up of 16 students is working towards developing a CH4/LOX liquid-propelled rocket engine. They are using AxSTREAM Space™ to design the turbomachinery components and system needed to achieve their long-term goal of launching a university developed rocket to the Karman line, the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and space.
