2006 was a very good year, as indicated by reports from users of AxSTREAM and positive developments within SoftinWay. Several new products were rolled out, our organization was strengthened with new talents that will help us to serve you better, and AxSTREAM’s worldwide presence was expanded by the addition of several highly qualified and experienced distributors. Several of these developments are discussed in greater detail in this newsletter.

AxSTREAM V.2.0 FOR RADIAL TURBOMACHINERY

In December 2006 SoftInWay released AxSTREAM v.2.0 which brings the proven design and optimization capabilities for axial turbomachinery to the world of radial turbomachinery. AxSTREAM can now be used to design flow paths for centrifugal compressor, radial turbines, mixed flow turbines, fans, blowers, turbochargers, turbopumps, etc. An educational version of AxSTREAM for radial turbomachinery was also released.

Along with design capabilities for radial turbines and compressors, AxSTREAM v.2.0 has incorporated into it a number of new and beneficial features such as:

  • Mixed/Radial/Axial flow path design “from scratch” and multidisciplinary optimization using a handful of basic parameters and a set of geometric constraints
  • Mixed/Radial/Axial flow path Meanline analysis and optimization with support of “as-designed” and off-design operational conditions
  • Throughflow analysis
  • Camberline/Thickness interactive profiling and airfoil design
  • Push-Button FEA
  • Integrated optimizer based on design-of-experiment (DoE) methodology
  • Performance maps generation
  • Capability to export 3D airfoil geometry in formats acceptable for Numeca, ANSYS CFX, etc. and in IGES format for NX, SolidWorks, Pro-E, ANSYS etc.

AxSTREAM EDUCATIONAL FOR RADIAL TURBOMACHINERY

Following the successful mid-year release of AxSTREAM Educational Version for axial turbines and compressors, SoftinWay has now released a similar Educational Version for Radial Turbomachinery. These programs are advanced teaching tools for any college or university conducting studies in the areas of turbomachinery design. They provide students and faculty access to leading edge turbomachinery design and multidisciplinary optimization software at minimum expense.

This program constitutes a "learn as you go" course that aids students in understanding the overall design and performance principles of radial turbines and centrifugal compressors through the same fully interactive AxSTREAM™ design programs used by engineering professionals throughout the world.

Seoul National University has placed the initial order for the radial educational version.

"Upon examination, we concluded that the educational versions of AxSTREAM™ offered by SoftInWay are powerful teaching tools in helping our engineering students develop from theoretical to practical, real world turbomachinery flow path design," said Dr. Shin-Hyoung Kang, Professor at School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Seoul National University. "This teaching tool will, no doubt, help our students be better engineers when they enter the industrial world."

INCREASING WORLDWIDE PRESENCE

SoftinWay is constantly moving forward in expanding its distribution network to better serve the worldwide turbomachinery community. Recently we completed an agreement with FEA-Opt Technology to provide distribution of its AxSTREAM™ Suite of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization software to the Taiwanese turbomachinery industry.

FEA Opt Technology (www.fea-optimization.com) provides high-technology solutions like Numerical Design Optimization, multi-physics CAE consultancy, CAE system integration and customization to the industrial and scientific customer bases within Taiwan. “Most of our personnel come from Taiwanese turbomachinery companies and are recognized CAE experts locally” said Dr. Shen-Yeh Chen, President of FEA Opt Technology and who is currently a consultant to several research institutes and corporations in Taiwan. “With AxSTREAM in our product line, FEA-Opt Technology can really provide total solutions to turbomachinery customers now.”

“We are very pleased to be establishing a partnership with such an experienced CFD/CAE solutions provider as FEA Opt Technology,” stated Dr. Leonid Moroz, President of SoftInWay. “Their past success in supporting clients in the industrial, aerospace and automotive industries in Taiwan will prove to be a great strength in establishing our design optimization software in these markets.”
