AxSTREAM
v1.7.05 Is Available!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BURLINGTON, Massachusetts, January 25, 2006
SoftInWay, Inc., is pleased
to announce availability of a new version
1.7.05 of AxSTREAM™ - a professional
tool for rapid turbomachinery flow path
design and multidisplinary optimization
that encompasses the complete engineering
process of turbomachinery flow path conceptual
design and multidisplinary optimization.
It'll be first presented at daratechSummit2006,
February 20-22, the Charles Hotel, Emerging
Technologies Pavilion, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
AxSTREAM version 1.7.05
inherits all advantages of the preceded
version appending some important features
to amend and enrich the software capabilities
in turbomachinery design and optimization.
The major new and weighty
feature is addition a DoE-based optimization
tool AxPLAN to Multistage Axial Compressor
flow path computation. Besides performing
preliminary design, cascades profiling,
creation of airfoil 3D models, and generation
of compressor maps, this addition allows
to carry out compressor flow path optimization
based on experiment planning technique.
New version provides the following
additional key functional benefits to the
turbomachinery designers that make the design
and optimization process more sophisticated
and convenient:
-
Compressor flow path
optimization with DoE-based tool (AxPLAN)
-
Enhanced spatial airfoil
profiling
-
Visualization of additional
throat features in 2D and 3D realization
-
Replenished set of
objective functions in AxPLAN
-
Extended set of airfoil
profiling types
The new functionalities streamline the process
of turbine / compressor analysis, extend AxSTREAM's
capabilities, noticeably decrease time required
for the project performance, and facilitate
end-user operation.
Some details of a new update are as follows:
- Compressor flow path optimization with
DoE-based tool (AxPLAN)
Being previously successfully applied for
turbine performance optimization, DoE-based
AxPLAN™ module is enabled now for
compressor computation. Optimization method
used by AxPLAN requires only the
values of the objective functions and state
variables without their derivatives. It
uses design of experiment (DoE) technique
for the fast design space exploration generating
compact formal models instead of huge original
ones.
- Enhanced spatial airfoil profiling
Airfoil 3D profiling is strengthened noticeably.
Now user can assign parameter distributions
with the help of a spline, forming by this
smooth surfaces easily and rapidly.
- Visualization of additional throat
passage features in 2D and 3D realization
New post-processing capabilities make possible
to visualize additionally channel throat's
line, centroids line, minimum throat passage,
and 3D throat location.
- Replenished set of objective functions
in AxPLAN
A set of objectives is extended with some
functions, which allow to further expand
domain of optimization.
- Extended set of airfoil profiling types
A set of airfoil profiling types was modified
and extended. From now on, it encompasses
a profile's virtual model built with design
angles given; profiling with given channel
throat geometry preserved; usage of the
profile loaded from ATLAS (AxSTREAM
existing standard profiles database) with
chord's scaling and with arrangement based
on given throat geometry or stagger angle.
AxSTREAM with its unique capabilities
gathered under one umbrella and supplemented
with easy utilization of corporate design
components (turbine, compressor, stage,
airfoil) presented as libraries and special
physical models is a choice for standalone
exploration and for integration in any proprietary
technologies within a company's organizations,
as well.
In comparison with many other design codes
& systems on the market, AxSTREAM features
ultimate concentration of turbomachinery
design procedures, providing fast and reliable
solutions.

5-Stage NICA Gas Turbine Design with AxSTREAM
in a Day
|
5-STAGE
NICA GAS TURBINE DESIGN WITH AxSTREAM
|
Abstract
A 5-stage gas turbine redesign was
the subject of the project.
Its redesign and reengineering aiming
increase in efficiency and reduction
in blades count preserving main meridional
dimensions was an objective.
The turbine was redesigned
with minor changes in meridional outlines.
An increase in internal efficiency
formed 2.75% (89.34 to 92.09%) while
the number of airfoils was decreased
by 30%.
The performance took near 8 hours
on a standard commercial PC 1GHz.
The original design
parameters calculated with AxSTREAM
are shown in Table 1. These quantities
and corresponding values formed initial
data set for further computation.

The changes came to minor increase
in meridional expansion angle,
reduction of blades count, and
blades’ angles variation.

AxSTREAM presents Table 2. |

To obtain best final
results, optimization on the planes
S1 and S2 were performed.
In the course of S1 optimization,
the following parameters varied:
- Blade count
- t/b ratio
In the course of S2
optimization, the following parameters
varied:
- reaction
- axial gap
- D2/D1 ratio or Dhub and Dshroud
values
- l2/l1 ratio or l2 and l1 values
Hub diameters served as the constraints.
In the course of redesign,
a DoE-based AxPLAN module was applied
to more rapidly optimize target functions.
