Digital prototyping is a "marriage" of a computer aided design (CAD) with computer aided modeling and optimization (CAE). The off –springs of this alliance are better products, delivered from conception to market place in shorter time.  This methodology grew up from aerospace and turbo-machinery industries and now it’s being applied more and more often for a variety of products.

SoftInWay shared its profound expertise in this methodology, participating in various industries events.

Some of the latest are highlighted below:

SoftInWay Is Awarded by SBIR Phase I Grant from NIST

SoftInWay, Inc. is pleased to announce that company has been awarded with Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant for Phase I research by National Institute of Standards (NIST). Research will focus on development of standards-based tests, cases and tools facilitating data exchange in STEP format between CAE systems. The NIST SBIR effort is lead by SoftInWay along with subcontractor STEP Tools, Inc. (Troy, NY).

Industry collaborators have developed a suite of standards in the Organization for International Standardization (ISO) to exchange neutral product model data. It is ISO 10303 Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP). Between early adopters of STEP there are such companies and organizations as NASA, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Caterpillar, PTC and others.

According to NIST, there are more then a million CAD, CAM and CAE workstations that exchange solid model geometries, assemblies of mechanical products and other information using STEP format. Nearly every CAD vendor now supports STEP AP203 translations and end users recognize that it is the most reliable way to move engineering data between systems.

A new generation of STEP application protocols AP209 is now coming on line supporting exchange of finite element analysis (FEA) models and analysis results. “We need to make the testing process more efficient, so that the delay before ordinary users can take advantage of the new capability is significantly reduced”, says Dr. Leonid Moroz, President and CEO of SoftInWay. “Without new testing tools, the delay could be worse because by definition the new STEP application protocols are more sophisticated, include more capability and therefore are harder to implement and test.”

Seminar on ANSYS Multiphysics Technologies

Organized by ANSYS within the seminar series devoted to leveraging its multi-physics technologies to gain a competitive advantage, ANSYS User Group seminar took place at Hewlett-Packard facilities in Lexington, Massachusetts on May 29, 2003. It gathered over 50 participants - engineers, designers, and managers from more than 30 companies and universities - who play a leading role in research, product development and verification. Engineers discussed latest ANSYS’ multi-physics and fluid-structure interaction capabilities and their impact on high-fidelity design. Participants shared best practices, asked implementation questions and raised issues with ANSYS developers and application engineers.

Dr. Igor Tchertkov, a Lead Engineer from SoftInWay’ Burlington office presented snap shots of three current digital prototyping projects involving ANSYS. First project was concerned with design, modeling and optimization of a die used for polymer extrusion. Results of thermo-mechanical analysis and modeling of fluid-structure interaction were presented. Modeling allowed customer to avoid costly temperature control of the die and obtain optimized die topology. Second project was concerned with coupled multi-physics analysis of micro electro-thermo-mechanical (MEMS) actuator. Results demonstrated that actuator fabricated from Ni should have superior properties over the one made from polysilicon. As a result customer could select a better suited micro fabrication process first time around, avoiding delays and expenses. However, most interest in the audience was sparked by presentation of parameterized mesh generators developed by SoftInWay for fast creation of optimal finite-element models. 2003 International Joint Power Generation Conference and Exposition

This well known international conference as always promotes technological progress and international cooperation in the power generation industry. This year's conference has been co-located with ASME Turbo Expo Land, Sea & Air, an event dedicated to gas turbines. The combined events had over 800 presentations to choose from.

SoftInWay participated in several tracks of this event, particularly, in Components, Plant Systems and Design Engineering sessions. However, main area of focus was the sessions of Combined Cycles, Combustion Turbines, Steam Turbines and Generators - the area SoftInWay has a significant expertise in. The results of research dedicated to turbine flow path design were reported in "COUPLED CFD AND THERMAL STEADY STATE ANALYSIS OF STEAM TURBINE SECONDARY FLOW PATH", paper by Dr. L. Moroz, President and CEO of SoftInWay, and Dr. A. Tarasov, Chief Technologist of Heat Transfer and CFD Group. Dr. Leonid Moroz, who was a featured speaker at one of the sessions says, "It was a pleasure and a great responsibility to speak before the academia experts and senior engineering and management staff from industry leading companies. “And we were pleased to see an evident interest shown by the audience to our work and innovative methodology."

The study has both scientific and practical orientation since it consolidates research and design issues.  The new computational methodology developed by the authors allowed significantly simplify process of secondary flow path design preserving required accuracy and reducing time and computational resources.
