Radial turbines are widely used in everyday life. Be it dental drills, turbochargers, air conditioning systems, or ORC installation, radial turbines can be found powering a wide variety of machines spanning a number of different industries across the world.  Until recently, the most common type of radial turbine was radial-inflow, in which the working medium flows from a larger radius to a smaller radius. Nowadays, the popularity of radial-outflow turbines, in which the flow moves in the opposite direction (from the center to the periphery), is growing. Radial-outflow turbines are most commonly used in installations based on organic Rankine cycles, however their use is not limited only to this application.

SoftInWay has performed large studies on the applicability of both radial-inflow and more recently, radial-outflow turbine types. In doing so, we have found the main advantages and disadvantages and made conclusions as to when this turbine type can be utilized with maximum efficiency.

Radial Turbine

This 1 hour webinar will describe the basics of turbine operation as well as explore the advantages and disadvantages of each turbine type. Special attention will be paid to the areas of radial turbine applicability and features of their design will be explored in SoftInWay’s integrated software platform, AxSTREAM®. We will conclude with a demonstration of several innovative conceptual ideas in the area of radial turbomachinery.

The webinar session will include:
  • A brief introduction to the history of radial turbine development.
  • Radial turbine operating principles and primary technological features.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of using both inflow and outflow configurations.
  • Scope of application for radial turbines
  • Innovative opportunities for radial turbine application, developed by SoftInWay Inc.
Who should attend:
  • Appliance and aerodynamics engineers involved in turbine development
  • Managers who are looking for the most effective type of turbine for a particular usage
  • Engineering students looking to expand their knowledge and/or work on turbines
