The first radial-outflow turbine design was invented by the Ljungström brothers in 1912. Since that time, the turbine hasn’t seen much use due to the decrease of specific work per stage caused by the increase of the peripheral velocity while expanding the vapor, and because of the usage of steam as a working fluid. It is known from thermodynamics that the expansion of steam is characterized by high enthalpy drops, high volumetric flows and high volumetric ratios. Thus, a significant number of stages are needed to convert the enthalpy drop of the fluid into mechanical energy.

Nowadays turbines for ORC are widely used. Organic fluids have a high molecular weight which leads to significantly lower enthalpy drops. Moreover, application of the non-standard design approach, which is based on non-equal heat drop distribution between stages, allows for the design of radial-outflow turbines with high efficiency, bother overall and in comparison to equal axial and radial-inflow turbines.

SoftInWay has performed large studies on the applicability of radial-outflow turbines for usage in ORC. In doing so, we have found its main advantages and disadvantages and made conclusions as to when this turbine type can be utilized with maximum efficiency.

This 1 hour webinar will describe and demonstrate the radial-outflow turbine design and analysis in our fully integrated software platform AxSTREAM®. The results of our study on the reasonability of using radial-outflow turbines in ORC will be highlighted with special focus paid to the comparison of the different turbine types (radial-inflow, axial and radial-outflow) for its application in the real 3 MW WHR ORC power unit for an internal combustion engine.
